Because the world is shrinking, more people zip off to do things like skiing, running marathons, etc.  We notice a big increase in solarium hire when a Hobart girl decides to get married in Bali during our winter!

So nowadays we get customers in for all sorts of equipment for all sorts of adventures.

It really is a small world.

The kid who could probably legitimately lay claim to being the fittest kid in Australia just happens to be my 18 yo nephew Jack.

Jack running the Brisbane Half Marathon

Jack is, very, very surprisingly, the son of my brother Brendon – the wimpiest, weakest athlete and bloke you’ll ever meet!  (The rest of my brothers and I tell people that Brendon’s our sister!)

Brendon used to be a Nursing Sister at St Johns and St Helens Hospitals for goodness sake!  he ain’t exactly a manly man!

Anyway, Jack’s list of endurance achievements is almost unbelievable.  They include:

• At 15, Jack became the youngest person to cycle across Australia – 4,500 kms in just 30 days
• At 16, he ran his first full marathon
• At 17, he won the schoolboy 96 km Kokoda Challenge – breaking the old schoolboy record

1,200 km Solo Run Around Tasmania

Next up is a staggering 1,200 km solo run around Tasmania that he started this morning at 9 am.

He’s running with a 6.5 kg backpack! (3 litres of water + clothes, etc)  His only real bit of equipment (apart from his runners, shorts and shirt) is his heart rate monitor – we sell these here at Sinclairs.

Taking just 27 days, 18 year old Jack plans to run more than a marathon a day to raise money for youth mentoring charity Big Brothers Big Sisters of Australia (BBBS).

My 15 yo son Matt and I ran with Jack out of Hobart (we left from the GPO) this morning for about 10 km as he headed on.

I’ve just spoken with him and he’s in Sorell getting something to eat! (Sorell’s about 25 km out of Hobart.)

So if you see a young guy running  by himself along a road anywhere up the East Coast over the next few days, be sure to give him a toot and a wave.

P.S: Jack finished the run right on schedule 27 days after he started – his longest run was 68 kms between Exter and Devonport.

His first day was a staggering 56 kms from Hobart to Buckland!  Read more about Jack here.

In a surprise to no-one here at Sinclairs Fitness, the Shop staff have defeated the mild, meek and plain wimpy Service Staff (one of them in their team uniform on the right) in a sensational battle at the Annual Sinclairs Sportsman’s/Sportswoman’s night.

The teams battled for supremacy in:

Service Staff Uniform

• Bowling
• Golf
• Coin Toss
• Eight Ball

with the Shop Staff strolling to an easy 4-2 victory.

As Adam Baker, Shop Manager, was heard to comment:

“I don’t like saying it but we’re fitter, younger, prettier and just plain tougher than the Service people.  They had Bryan Sinclair on their team and he’s gotta be 70 if he’s a day old.

We’re not going to lose to a team led by a pensioner.”

Loser Bryan Speaks Out

Dejected Service Team Leader Big Burly Bryan Sinclair had this to say:

“Wow!  What an incredible exhibition by the Shop Staff.  I only wish I had their youth, vitality, good looks and hair, not to mention access to the web site to edit what other people say.

The Service Team only wish we had 1% of their talent and that we weren’t a bunch of spindly armed nancy boys and girls.”

The legendary Point to Pinnacle race is on November 21 this year with another terrific field taking part.

With lots of goodies for all entrants and some great prizes on offer, it promises to be another fantastic running of this 21.4 km race up the mountain.

We’ve had lots of people in the shop over the past few weeks getting ready for the big race, with our Lorna Jane gear providing very popular for the ladies.

Their inspirational messages are proving very popular.

An Easy Run!

One of my favourite stories from the race is from a mate who did the race a few years back.

As he was struggling up the mountain he was passed by an older fellow.

As he went  past the old guy said to him:

“Keep going mate.  It’s an easy race.  Only 1 hill!”

Matt Sinclair, who works here at Sinclairs to earn some pocket money (got his job here because he knows the owner – his old dad Bryan!), had a great run at the National Cross Country championships in Brisbane on the weekend.

Matt stormed home and looked very strong at the finish – although he missed out on a place it was a great effort by the 15 yo in the Under 18 Cross Country National titles.

Okay, here it is – our latest TV ad starring Will and Taylah Sinclair (my nephew and niece) – they’re the 2 muppets kids playing Monopoly in the final frame.

They demanded $1,000 acting fee, but I managed to get them down to an Icecream and a horsey ride each!  Bargain!
